Who are we?
Salt of the Earth are a UK based charity that fund integrated rural development projects in South India. Our projects include women’s empowerment, water purification and generation, health, education, training and livelihood, and environmental incentives and awareness programmes across some of Tamil' Nadu’s poorest villages. Why we collect and use personal data:
SOTE collect personal data to help us keep in touch with you, update sponsors, and process payments.
Examples of why we process your personal data include:
To keep you updated on our work and the impact of your support.
To update you on SOTE events.
To invite you to participate in campaigns and appeals.
To send you our newsletter.
To support you as a volunteer.
To process donations or other payments, and verify financial transactions to protect you from fraud.
To process Gift Aid donations and Gift Aid Declarations.
To process a legacy or gift that you leave in your will.
To provide services, products or information that you have requested.
To record your preferences for contact.
To notify you of changes to our policies and how and when these may affect you.
If we need to do so, to comply with a law, process or regulatory requirement.
We are committed to supporting rural villages in Tamil Nadu, and promote ourselves and our work with the intention of further supporting vulnerable communities. We persue requests for donations and share appeals in a respectful manner. On average, SOTE send 5 email updates a year, including two newsletter subscriptions, one tree planting newsletter subscription, and two child sponsorship updates- specific to subscribes and sponsors. At times of emergency or great milestones, SOTE have been known to send up to 3 further emails per year.
The information we collect:
In order to provide our full range of services, we may collect the following types of information:
Your name and Surname.
Your postal and email addresses.
Your telephone number or numbers.
Preferences on how you would like hear from us, and when you told us this.
Details of any donations that you have made to us.
Whether or not you have signed up to the Gift Aid Scheme, and when you did so.
Any fundraising appeals that you may have responded to.
Your bank account details if you set up a direct debit with us.
We do not store credit card details.
Our partners in India will be aware of child and village sponsors’ names to personalise letters and reports. Our partners do not have access to a sponsor’s telephone contact, address, email address, or bank details. The only piece of information our partners are aware of concerning a sponsor is their name.

How long do we keep your data for:
Once you are no longer an active supporter, we will keep your data for a set period of time, which we calculate depending on the information that you originally provided, and why you gave it to us. At the end of this time period, we will remove any personal details from our records of you, to ensure that any information is entirely anonymous. In general, we will keep records of financial donors for at least seven years, to meet our requirements for any Gift Aid audit from HMRC. If we have asked for sensitive personal data specific to an event, we will dispose of this data within a month after the event.
