How You Can Help

Over the years we have built up a lot of experience in fund-raising for the charity. Listed below are some of the things that have worked well in the past, and which you might like to consider. Also available to you are sponsorship forms, information about the charity and, above all, advice and support. If you would like help, please contact Murray Frankland.

Personal Donations

Giving regularly through a Standing Order is obviously best but, of course, one-off donations are also very welcome. In either case, if you are a standard rate taxpayer, you can complete a Gift Aid form and we can claim back the tax that you have already paid on the gift.

Spread the word about the charity amongst your family and friends. Your enthusiasm about the work of the charity will encourage others to give too. Don’t be afraid to ask others for money and make it clear to them that it is
OK to say no, but that you would love them to say yes.

Instead of sending Christmas and Birthday cards and presents, give the money saved to the charity and let people know what you are doing. Our supporters have extended this principle to include weddings, funerals, anniversaries and retirement occasions. Encourage your friends and families to follow suit. Many of us have all we need and it is satisfying to be able to give direct to those less fortunate than ourselves.

Support our Plant a Tree scheme - invest in some trees yourself, or get a group of friends and relatives together and buy lots. Remember every tree planted makes a huge difference to the environment in Tuticorin and really helps the struggling subsistence farmers.

Remember Salt of the Earth in your Will. Many people are happy to consider leaving money to charity in their Will and, if you have not already done so, perhaps you would consider making Salt of the Earth a beneficiary in your
Will. It can be a great comfort to know that, after our own death, the wonderful work that SCAD does with the poorest of the poor can continue long into the future. If you have already drawn up a Will, it is quite easy for your Solicitor to draw up a codicil, which can be attached to your current Will at far less cost than drawing up a new Will.

Sponsorship

Sponsor a Child.

Sign up to our very successful scheme, which supports 5 to 10 year old children who live in six particularly disadvantaged villages. A key aspect of SCAD’s approach is to work with the communities to find and implement sustainable solutions that have a positive impact in the long term, rather than only tackling immediate needs. Empowering the young and providing them with a chance to change the cycle of poverty is crucial in achieving this aim. SCAD implements a holistic package that improves the standard of life for all the children in the villages. This includes schooling and vocational training, natural nutritional supplements as well as health education to both parent and children. For just £12 per month you can help to change the life of a child by bringing benefits to their whole family and community. As a sponsor, you would receive a photo and twice-yearly reports on the progress of your child and the village. Many sponsors exchange letters with their child. Download a Child Sponsorship form here.

Sponsor a Village.

This is a wonderful opportunity for groups of people – friends, work colleagues, places of worship, businesses etc. to club together to support a whole village community of approximately 250 families. Sponsors are asked to commit to paying £1,000 per year for five years: it is a significant long-term commitment which provides a unique opportunity to change the lives of a community and to receive feedback as to the progress which is being made in that village. For further information, please contact
Murray Frankland.

Adopt the Charity.

Perhaps the charity could be ‘adopted’ by your workplace, club, place of worship, society or local school and remembered by them at particular times like Christmas, Divali etc. Some work places have charitable funds for distribution and like to encourage employees to become involved in charitable work.

Fundraise

Organise a money-raising event where the profit goes to the charity. It is up to you to decide what to do but successful previous events have featured classical and jazz concerts, fetes, dinner dances, dinner parties at home, car boot sales, raffles, car washes and barn dances. Choose something you and your friends really enjoy doing and then just go ahead and do it. These events do not have to be hard to organise, they are great fun and generate enthusiasm and commitment to the charity.

Take part in a Sponsored Event. Either take part in an organised event or set up one for yourself. Our supporters have run half and full marathons, ridden a motorcycle around the Isle of Man TT circuit, ridden bikes, sky dived, swum, read, fasted, slimmed, walked and abseiled. There is an enormous sense of satisfaction to be had from raising money in this way. If there is anything challenging that you have always wanted to do, then this could be your opportunity.

Organise a stall in aid of the charity. Two of the Trustees run a mobile stall selling merchandise they buy in India when on their annual visit to SCAD. Some of the goods are even made at SCAD. There is a wide range of jewellery, cotton goods, rugs, cushion covers, candles, incense etc. etc. all at very reasonable prices. Supporters of the charity host stalls in their homes or local halls and often make an enjoyable social occasion of it. The profit from the stalls pays for the expenses of Salt of the Earth, and anything left over goes directly to SCAD.

Sign up as a Volunteer on an AidCamp at SCAD. For more information go to our Visiting the Project page and for full details visit the AidCamps International website at www.AidCamps.org.
