The Elders programme is another groundbreaking programme which we have supported since its beginning in the late nineties. SCAD detected that there were more older people being abandoned in the villages without any income. Older people without sons have nobody to look after them when their income generating days are over and, unfortunately, there is a growing tendency for families to turn their backs on the old. The scheme arranges for them to receive a small monthly stipend which covers their basic needs and they attend a monthly day centre where they see a Doctor, have a slap up meal and some social time. For day to day needs in their village Women Self Help Group members see to it that they are clothed and sheltered. There are over 1,000 Elders on the programme and a growing waiting list. The programme allows the Elders to live the final part of their lives in dignity and with security and, as far as we know, is unique in Tamil Nadu.
